What's new in Windows Home Server Power Pack 1?
Windows Home Server Power Pack 1 updates the initial release of Windows Home Server with new features and fixes. It also includes all previously released fixes described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 941913 at the Microsoft Web site (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=105591) and in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 941914 at the Microsoft Web site (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=105592).
Power Pack 1 adds the following features and fixes:
Windows Home Server Connector software
You can now install the Windows Home Server Connector software on home computers that are running the 64-bit version of the Windows Vista® operating system.
Better guidance is provided when a home computer clock and the home server clock differ significantly while you are installing the Connector software.
Functionality is added to detect whether the version of the Connector software aligns with the version of Windows Home Server. Under certain circumstances, you are prompted to update either the Connector software or the home server software.
While you are installing the Connector software, you are asked if you want to wake the computer up for backups during the nightly backup time. By default, if the computer is in sleep mode or hibernate mode, it is set to wake up for a nightly backup.
While you are installing the Connector software, you are asked if you want to automatically receive future updates for the Connector software on your home computers whenever Windows Home Server is updated. Alternatively, you can choose to manually update the Connector software on your home computers. The default is to have the Connector software automatically updated. If you chose to receive automatic updates and later want to change this, you can run the Connector Setup again on your home computer to select the manual option when prompted.
The Windows Home Server Connector tray icon no longer causes flickering when the auto-hide task bar is enabled.
When you install the Connector software using the Power Pack 1 Connector CD, it finds the software located on your home server and installs the Connector software from there. This means that the latest Connector software is always installed on your home computers, and you don't need to replace your Connector software CD whenever there is a software update. You can always install the Connector software on a home computer by connecting to the Software shared folder on your home server and then running WHSConnectorInstall.exe in the Home Server Connector Software folder.
Home Server Backup
You can can now back up and restore your home server shared folders to an external hard drive.
When you add a hard drive to your home server, you are given an option to use the hard drive to back up your home server shared folders. When you select this option, your home server appears in the Computers & Backup tab. You can then use Backup Now to back up your shared folders to the hard drive.
You can view and restore your home server shared folder backups on the Computers & Backup tab.
Remote Access
When you add or edit a user account in the Console, you can use a new Remote Access option to specify if the user account can access the Computers tab, the Shared Folders tab, or both.
The Router and Domain Name Configuration details dialogs in the Remote Access Settings page now include a more descriptive status and contextual help links for the failed tests.
A new Views drop-down list is on the Shared Folders tab in Remote Access. You can use the Views list to see the files in a shared folder either as a list of files (Details view) or as thumbnails (Icons view). In Icons view, the majority of the picture files are represented as a thumbnails, and the rest of the non-picture files and folders are displayed as large icons.
Uploading files is improved for users of the Microsoft® Internet Explorer® 6 or Internet Explorer 7 browser:
- You can drag-and-drop to upload multiple files directly into an upload area, or you can click Browse to select files.
- The upload progress reporting is improved with the addition of a progress bar and upload status of individual files.
- You can now cancel a multiple file upload.
- You can now finish uploading large files before the remote session times out.
When you download multiple files, you can now package the files in a self-extracting executable (.exe) file, in addition to a .zip file. You should use a self-extracting executable file to download files with names that use non-ASCII characters (for example, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, etc.).
Home Computer Backup
If the backup database on the home server has an inconsistency error, you can now use the Backup Database Repair Wizard to try to correct the error. You can start the Repair Wizard from the Settings Backup page, or you can click the Backup notification.
A new option is in the Windows Home Server Connector tray icon. You can choose whether you want a home computer to wake up from sleep or hibernation mode for a backup.
You can now run Backup Cleanup while the Single File Restore dialog is open.
The name of the excluded folder Media center temporary files is changed to Recorded TV.
Home computers running Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Windows Vista are no longer incorrectly identified as Windows Server Longhorn Ultimate Edition on the Computers & Backup tab.
Home computers running any version of Windows XP Media Center Edition (2004 or 2005) are displayed as Windows XP Media Center Edition in the Computers & Backup tab.
When you restore an entire home computer from a backup that is stored on the home server, the Home Computer Restore CD now downloads and runs the most recent version of Restore software that is stored on the home server.
The home computer backup process is now more resilient to intermittent network connection problems caused by wireless networks or network interface cards.
The previous two versions of the Home Computer Restore CD have been replaced by a new version (Dual Boot) to support a wider range of home computers. The Power Pack 1 Home Computer Restore CD gives you two options. One option is recommended to use on home computers with less than 512MB of memory and the other option is recommended to use on home computers with 512MB or more memory.
Server Storage
The data corruption issue described Knowledge Base article #946676 has been fixed.
File attributes (such as Read-Only, Permissions, or file version) are now correctly copied to duplicated shared folders when you change the shared-folder attributes using the Windows Home Server Console.
Long file paths (more than 240 characters) are now supported on Windows Home Server shared folders.
A bug that resulted in the Windows Home Server Console constantly reporting Balancing Storage has been fixed. Balancing Storage includes migration of files to secondary data volumes. Prior to Power Pack 1, this happened whenever there was file activity in the Windows Home Server shared folders directory. In this update both migration as well as rebalancing files across volumes for better space utilization is initiated under the following conditions:
- Every hour.
- When the Drive Extender Migrator service starts up, typically this is when you first turn on your home server.
- When a shared folder is added or removed using the Windows Home Server Consoles Shared Folders tab.
- When duplication on a shared folder is enabled or disabled.
- When a hard drive is added to Server Storage using the Windows Home Server Console.
In addition, the Windows Home Server Console no longer displays Balancing Storage and only displays the last time Server Storage was balanced
Overall performance improvements:
- With this update, the Drive Extender Migrator uses non-cached memory when moving files to secondary volumes. This should improve the performance of migration passes, and speed hard drive removal.
- File copy performance to and from the Windows Home Server shared folders has been improved.
Windows Home Server proactively checks the health of all files stored in shared folders during a migration pass. If any issues are discovered, a yellow health notification is sent that contains a detailed conflict reason for each file.
Hard drive removal is enhanced to list the files that Windows Home Server is not able to move off the hard drive. The reason for the failure is also noted in a details page that appears at the end of the hard drive removal wizard.
A new and improved storage size algorithm is implemented for listing Server Storage usage.
- Free space is now measured from the hard drives connected to your home server.
- Prior to Power Pack 1, the System size was computed based on the size of the C: partition (20GB) and the size of D:\folders\. With Power Pack 1, the System size is now calculated as total size minus the sum of the shared folders, duplicated folders, and home computer backups.
- After Power Pack 1 is installed, you may see an increase in the System size because of the new algorithm. The increased size accounts for volume shadow copies, the Recycle Bin, as well as any files that are stored on your home server outside the shared folders or application folders.
To reclaim the space, try the following:
-- Empty the Recycle Bin. If you use your home server as a desktop, the Recycle Bin may have some files in it.
-- Check the following folder to view and delete and orphan shadow files: folders\{1618D36B-F4E7-4360-B070-A32070519DC9}\
-- Delete the existing shadow copies. To do this, open a command prompt window on your home server (via a Remote Desktop Connection or using the Windows Home Server Toolkit Add-in) and run the following command: vssadmin delete shadows/all.
Caution! If you do this, all the folder and file previous versions in your Windows Home Server shared folders will be deleted.
Media Sharing
Windows Media Player playlists that link to media files stored on Windows Home Server now play correctly via Windows Media Connect, if you copy the playlists to your home server and share them via Media Library Sharing.
Miscellaneous
Processor power management is enabled by default in Windows Home Server during a new installation of the software using the Server Balanced Process Power and Performance power scheme as the default setting.
The Windows Home Server Console is more resilient to poorly written add-ins, and it should eventually load even if an installed add-in is not functioning correctly.
Windows Home Server Setup no longer reports an issue with Windows Desktop Search service during the initial installation using the Server Installation DVD.
The Windows Home Server logo now correctly appears during a new Windows Home Server installation.
