Computers with no Power Management

Martin, you can run but you can't hide buddy.. :ugeek:

Wow a lot has changed since our conversation over at the 'other board'... To refresh your memory I'm the guy with the ridiculous requests for functionality to handle servers with no power management system. :o

The last we spoke, you had helped me setup a 'wake up' system for my WHS 2011 system with no power management functionality using my ultra low powered home automation computer (windows 10) to wake the server for backup and other functionality. The last we left, the HA computer would not wake the server with the schedule. I believe that was with the first build of V2.

I've been really busy over the last 7 months so I didn't have time to mess with it, but I do now.. :?. I upgraded my systems to the latest version and still no joy. AND I've noticed another interesting problem.

1) So the first problem, the HA computer (windows 10) will not wake the WHS 2011 machine via schedule, BUT can wake the machine with the task bar client.

2) So the second is when I create a schedule inside the HA computer to wake the WHS, I get only 6 min no matter what I set the end time.

Here are a couple of pictures to help.

To recap: A Lights-Out server installation is on your HA computer (with windows 10) and on your WHS. The screen shots above are from your HA machine, correct?

The WHS is seen as a network device, therefore there's no uptime end setting because you can only send a magic packet to a network device. You should enable "Wake server for execution". This ensures that the HA computer is itself ready to send the magic packet to the WHS.

Sorry for the delay, I was thinking the forum would send me a notice on reply.....

Your racap is correct. I have a multi 'server' lic.
Yes the screen shots are from the HA machine.

The HA computer runs 24/7 so I didn't think that switch was necessary?

Only if you check the Option, that's not the Default ... or you can set it in the personal settings

Sorry for my late reply, I've been on vacation the last two weeks.

Can you wake the WHS in the network devices tab via right click and "send magic packet"?

Yes, I can also wake the WHS via the lights out task bar client. Is there any logging to determine when/if a calendar item fires and when / the computer on the other side received it? Like 'Magic Pack Wake' in the 'Recording' section?

Calendar actions are logged, i.e. we should be able to see if a WoL packet is sent.
We can't always see if it's working. Windows records the wake-up reason if provided by the driver.

If you want me to analyze the logs, polease open a ticket here https://www.green-it-software.com/osticket
Then attach your server logs. Simply zip the whole folder c:\programdata\LightsOut2\Logs (via right click, send to compressed folder) and attach the archive to the ticket. If you do not see a folder c:\programdata, then open explorer options and enable "show hidden files and folders".
