LightsOut2 on WHS 2011

Beitrag von LanMan »

Hi Martin,

I have been using LightsOut V1.xx for years. Great product.

Two things:

1) I am running LightsOut 2.xx on my WHS 2011 server. It has worked for several years using LightsOut 1.xx and the built in backup program that came with WHS 2011. I like it because it has de-duplication and provides an alternative to Windows 7 Backup that comes with Windows 10. I just added a new Windows 10 computer and the only choice the LightsOut2 console provides for a backup provider is Windows 7 Backup. Is this the backup program on the client computer or the native backup provided by WHS 2011? Do we still have access to the native WHS 2011 backup software?

2) The WHS 2011 dashboard no longer runs because the original WHS 2011 Connector was uninstalled on the client computers. Is this be design? Do I need the Dash Board to set a backup in the old WHS 2011 backup software?

Thanks,
LanMan

You need the WHS 2011 Connector at the Client to use then WHS 2011 Backup. The Dashboard needs the Connector too. You can start the Dasboard directly on the server using Remote Desktop.

Larry:

Thanks. Is it possible to install the WHS 2011 Connector/Dashboard and the LightsOut2 Connector on the same client connecting to the same server?

When I tried I got a message that the server was already connected and I needed to uninstall the other connector.

Yes, it works. That must be the case.

For me it works. First the WHS connector was installed and then the One of LightsOut.

Thanks. Yes I did get it to install. I did it in the opposite order on the client uninstall WHS 2011 Connector, install LightsOut2 Connector, reinstall WHS 2011 ignoring the error/warning message. Seems to be working Ok.

I need some help.

OK...I got LightsOut v1 installed and working on WHS2011 and no computer was backed up at night. So I installed LightsOut2 trial and the same thing happened. None of my 6 client computers were waking up. All of them failed to wake when tasks scheduled on the client by any of WHS 2011, LightsOut V1 and Lights Out2 were triggered. All are running Windows 10 anniversary edition.

I dug into the Windows 10 settings to enable wake timers, device manager, Power Options, powercfg, Task Scheduler and BIOS. Now after 10 hours of struggle and testing I have one computer that wakes up as scheduled in Task Manager. The rest steadfastly refuse to wake during the default WHS 2011 backup period and refuse to wake on LAN.

Backup is not possible If the client cannot wake itself up.

What is the best strategy if the computers will not wake at night? Is there any other way to get computer to wake a night other than RTC in the BIOS? Should I get rid of WHS 2011 and install Windows 10 and use LightsOut2 to run it as a server? Backup during the day when users are at the keyboard is not very appealing.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

I may have the problem solved.

I left four computers in sleep mode over night. Some were in S3, one was S0. All showed that they had been backed up over night except the one sleeping in S0. Looks like the changes I made to Windows 10 and the BIOS may have worked.

All four computers were set to wake during the Standard Backup Period and LightsOut was set to make backups during the Standard Backup period. And All four clients were set up to use Wake-On-LAN in case the client task scheduler failed to wake the clients.

Is there a way to tell if the client woke by itself or via WOL from Lights Out?

Thanks.

You can inspect the system event log. Look for entries from kernel-power or power-troubleshouter.
