This is the last issue before I can release 3.5 and I need to understand what's going wrong here.

For the fellow readers:
We were able to solve the problem. On a WHS 2011, the TLS 1.2 protocol is present but not enabled by default. However, this is now required by Apple.
The fix will be included in version 3.5 and requires a server restart.
